Free Setup + 2 Months Free Anhosting.com The Password Gate "How To" Page Once you have become a member of Bravenet, and registered for Password Gate, you can start protecting any page on your site - up to 20 of them! Put the Password Gate on the front page of your site, and it will be the door to access other areas of your site. Let your visitors know their username and password and they will be able to go through the gate. The Password Gate service is a gateway between pages, it is not like a server-side password protection system which will intercept a visitor trying to access a page and prompt them for a password. The Password Gate system allows you to assign a username and password to pages, not people (up to a maximum of 20 pages). All of your protected pages should be 'hidden', that is they should not be accessible or linked to from any other part or page on your site. The idea is to restrict access to your hidden pages so that they can only be accessed through the Gate. So, you would add the Password Gate code we provide you with to page A to protect page B, C, D etc. Then enter the username and password for page B, C, D etc, in the Manage Gates option in the Password Gate manager in the Members Area. When a visitor enters the correct username and password for a specific page, they will be sent to that page. The Members Area In the Members Area find "Password Gate". Click on it and you will come to the Password Gate Manager, here you will see links to, General Settings (change frame background/edit message details) Manage Gates Statistics Password Protection Settings Password Protection Settings will walk you through the customization of service. To change or add a background color or image to the frame that will appear on your site, simply fill in the appropriate information. Double check for spelling errors and URL references to images. Here are a few helpful hints: For colors, you can use either the "named color" (RED) or the "hex color" (#FF0000). If you use a background image, try to use a background color that is similar to the image. You must know the full URL to any images you want to use for your Password Gate frame. Pictures all end in (.gif) or (.jpg). For example: www.yourserver.com/yoursite/picture.gif Note: If you do not know the location of your image, it's easy to find out. Internet Explorer: "Right-click" on the image. From the menu that pops up, click on "properties". Copy the image address (URL) from the box that will pop up on your screen. Netscape users: "Right-click" on the image. Choose "copy image location", and paste this into the image text box in the Manager. Customizing the Password Message Using the Password Gate Settings area, type in the message a user will see if their login fails. We suggest you keep your email address in the message for people to contact you. NOTE: HTML is allowed and encouraged. Manage Gates This is where you enter the URLs you wish to protect. This is also where you assign the passwords for access to each URL. You can protect up to 20 URLs. To allow access to the respective URLs, simply give your users the password and userid you assign to the respective URL. Statistics This is where you the activity of your pages and modify the stats. To change the stats, simply enter a number in the box provided and hit "modify". This is a great feature for monitoring activity to your protected pages on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. That's it...you're all done! Remember...check back with us often for great new services from Bravenet!
